San Ramon Staircase Balloon Garland and Balloon Drop for New Year's Eve

Jamie sent us a photo of her staircase and her color preferences, and she had a big ask for her New Year's Eve party in San Ramon. She wanted a balloon garland winding up the stairs and a balloon drop to fall right at midnight. Two installations, one room, and only one chance to get the countdown right.

We built a 20 foot staircase balloon garland in champagne, silver and black, and a 200 balloon drop above the party. Here's how it came together, from the first measurements to the moment the net opened.

Planning the San Ramon Staircase Garland and Balloon Drop

Jamie was expecting 30 guests. She wanted the 200 balloon drop and the 20 foot garland for her staircase, with a mix of 5 inch, 11 inch and 17 inch balloons so the garland would look full from every angle.

We started with a consultation to talk through the color scheme, the type of balloons, and how she pictured the garland climbing the staircase. Getting those choices settled early meant every balloon we inflated already had a place.

Challenges and Solutions for the Balloon Drop

Challenge 1 - The drop has to work the first time

A balloon drop gives you one chance. If the net sticks at midnight, there's no second countdown. So we planned the rigging and the release before we planned anything else.

Challenge 2 - Ceiling height

From Jamie's photos, we worried the ceiling might be too low and the balloons could hang near guests' heads. We visited the house beforehand to take measurements, then brought extra high strength hooks and planned backup rigging points so we could adjust on the spot.

Challenge 3 - Rain and slippery balloon shine

On install day it rained. A lot. Some balloons got wet, so we dried every one before bringing it into Jamie's home.

The Mega Shine balloon polish we used also made the balloons slippery, so we covered the floors with plastic sheets while we worked.

Preparing the Staircase Garland and Balloon Drop

Prep took 2.5 hours before we ever got to the house. We inflated 400 balloons, sorted them by size, and polished each one. On the day of the party, setup at Jamie's house took 2 hours. We built the garland up the staircase and secured the balloon drop net in place.

For the garland, we placed each balloon to create a soft gradient, mixing sizes for depth so it looked lush and full. The curved staircase was a great canvas, and we checked it from the bottom step, the landing and across the room.

When the clock struck midnight, the 200 balloon drop came down right on cue. The 20 foot staircase garland in champagne, silver and black framed the whole room for the rest of the night.

The next day we came back to collect the balloon drop net, and Jamie asked us to leave the garland up because she loved it so much. That's our favorite kind of pickup.
