Homecoming Balloon Arch and Marquee Letters on a Windy Pleasanton Lawn

A mom in Pleasanton found out at the last minute that her son was having friends over for homecoming, with pictures at the house. She had no decorations planned and less than a week to pull it together. So Michelle, Joni and I set up a 30 foot blue, yellow and white homecoming balloon arch and HOCO 2026 marquee letters on her lawn, and made the whole thing easy for her.

Then the wind showed up. Guests were coming at 5 PM, we had started at 3, and the wind kept catching the arch. It had to stay put on an open lawn, and the letters had to show up in every group photo. Here's how we got both done before the party started.

A homecoming photo spot for Foothill High in Pleasanton

She reached out on a Sunday. I sent her our inspiration guide and our color options the same day, and offered to hop on a call if she wanted help deciding. By Monday her date was booked and the plan was set. Setup at 3 PM at her home in Pleasanton, guests at 5, on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The order was a Foothill High homecoming photo spot. A 30 foot balloon arch in blue, yellow and white, with link balloons looping across the inside, set up with HOCO 2026 marquee letters on the lawn.

It was sunny and over 70 degrees. A great day for photos, as long as the arch stayed where we put it.

Setting up on the lawn

We set the arch on the lawn with six sandbags on its legs to hold it down. Then the link balloons went in. They're what give this arch its look, rows of white, yellow and blue looping across the inside like the strands on our balloon garlands.

Getting the loops to hang right took some hands on work. We cut and retied link balloons to make each strand longer or shorter until the layers sat the way I wanted.

When the wind kept hitting the balloon arch

When the wind keeps catching a balloon arch on an open lawn, we move it instead of fighting it. We lift the sandbags off the legs, slide the arch and turn it so the wind isn't hitting it head on, then weight the legs again. That's what Michelle, Joni and I did here, with guests due at 5.

Step 1 - Pull the sandbags

First we took all six sandbags off the legs, so the arch could slide.

Step 2 - Slide and turn the balloon arch

Then we slid it across the lawn and turned it out of the wind. As soon as it sat where we wanted it, the sandbags went back on.

Step 3 - Move the HOCO 2026 marquee letters

The letters moved too. We moved them, then moved them right back once the arch was settled.

Step 4 - Set the balloon arch and marquee letters side by side

We set the arch and letters side by side, not with the letters underneath. Kids would be standing inside the arch for group photos, and if the letters sat under it, the kids would block the wording. Side by side, the whole group fits inside and HOCO 2026 still reads clearly next to them.

We layered the edge of the arch just behind the 6, so the balloons and the letters show up together in the same shot. Our client was happy for us to angle the letters, so everything fits in one photo.

The finished setup had the arch and its blue, yellow and white link balloons on one side, HOCO 2026 on the other, and a clear spot inside it for a group to stand. Nothing came down. Less than a week earlier she had no decorations planned, and now her son and his friends had a photo spot waiting on the lawn. It's the kind of homecoming photo backdrop a whole group can stand in. Homecoming balloon arch FAQs

How much does a homecoming balloon arch cost?

Custom installs start at $650. The final price depends on the size, the coverage, the colors and the install. See our custom balloon arches for more.

Can you match our school colors?

Yes. This arch used blue, yellow and white, and we build the color mix around your event.

Can a balloon arch go on a lawn or outside when it's windy?

Yes, with planning. Wind, sun and the ground all shape how we build and anchor an outdoor balloon arch, so tell us about all three before the day. On this job we pulled the sandbags, slid and turned the arch out of the wind, and weighted it again. Our outdoor balloon questions cover more, and here's a backyard arch with link balloons in Danville.

Where should the balloon arch go so the marquee letters show in group photos?

Put the marquee letters beside the arch, not under it, so the group in the arch doesn't cover the words. Send us a photo of the spot and tell us where the group will stand. We plan the layout before we arrive and adjust on site if we need to.

How far ahead should we book for homecoming?

We recommend booking at least 2 to 4 weeks ahead so there's time to check your date and get the design right. Large installations, custom signs and venues with strict access rules may need more time. If your event is sooner, reach out anyway. We take last minute events and will tell you what's possible in the time you have. This one came together in less than a week.
